Our three sustainability pillars

Health and Nutrition

Our goal is to enable consumers to improve their health and wellbeing by providing affordable good nutrition.

Our health and nutrition agenda is integral to our core purpose. It speaks directly to our business model and addresses the socio-economic imperatives in our South African operating context while offering valuable growth opportunities.

Our approach – including renovating existing products, innovating new products, and all labelling, marketing and communications – is founded on our Eat Well Live Well (EWLW) nutrition standards, developed with the University of Stellenbosch’s Nutrition Information Centre (NICUS). These category-specific standards define parameters for nutrients to promote and limit and are aligned with globally recognised nutritional guidelines and South African regulatory requirements. Our on-pack labelling system includes a guideline daily amounts (GDA) table, “Be Nutrient Wise” icon, and EWLW stamp of approval for “good for you” products.

Enhanced livelihoods

We are improving the livelihoods of thousands of people by creating opportunities for inclusive economic participation across our value chain.

We have set 2030 targets relating to employment equity, enterprise and supplier development (ESD), preferential procurement, and socio-economic development (SED). These targets cover gender representation in the workforce and racial diversity in management, supplier development funding, support for black-owned enterprises and job creation, procurement from black-owned suppliers, and investment in community enterprises.

Environmental Stewardship

Our goal is to significantly reduce the environmental impact of our manufacturing sites to protect the natural resources we rely on.

Our environmental stewardship agenda is focused on addressing:

  • Energy and climte change – Our energy and climate efforts respond to global climate action needs, national energy supply challenges, and climate-related risks to our operations and upstream agricultural supply chain. We are working to reduce our energy use intensity and carbon emissions, and source more of our electrical energy requirements from renewable sources.
  • Water and effluent – More than half our facilities are in water-stressed catchments. Our water management is focused on reducing our intensity of water use and is grounded in compliance with the National Water Act and municipal by-laws, while ensuring responsible effluent discharges. We measure freshwater consumption and track water usage at site level across all sites, with rapid response to anomalies and leaks. To support these initiatives, we run ongoing water-efficiency programmes, complemented by a comprehensive water-risk assessment conducted in 2024.
  • Waste and packaging – Our waste and packaging management balances environmental impact reduction with food safety and quality requirements, while we work to address plastics pollution and indirect carbon emissions. Zero waste-to-landfill by 2030 is our overarching goal, supported by our participation in the South African Plastics Pact and South African Food Waste and Loss Voluntary Agreement. Our key packaging drive is transitioning applicable product lines to recyclable PET packaging and increasing the recycled content in our packaging where possible.
The Tiger Brands Foundation

In 2010, we founded The Tiger Brands Foundation to expand our social impact in food and nutrition. Since 2011, the Tiger Brands  Foundations’ in-school breakfast programme has complemented the lunch provided by the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP) and has proven to be one of the most efficient nutrition programmes in South Africa. The programme plays a crucial role in addressing the nutritional needs of leaners and promoting their overall wellbeing, by serving them a nutritious in-school breakfast.

The foundation operates under an independent board of trustees and collaborates with various funders and partners, including Tiger Brands, to support in-school nutrition nationally. The foundation runs a highly impactful national in-school breakfast programme that we continue to support annually, helping schools participate, sponsoring the construction of school kitchens, and training food handlers to prepare and serve meals. Through its ownership structures, Tiger Brands contributes approximately 5% of shareholding dividends annually to the foundation’s initiatives.

Sustainable agricultural sourcing

Sustainable agricultural sourcing is a key strategic enabler to drive positive commercial and environmental impact across our value chain. It is essential both to ensure the sustainable commercial supply of key commodities used to produce our loved brands and to strengthen environmental and socio-economic resilience across our value chain. Our goal is to build a sustainable agricultural supply chain that strengthens security of supply, enhances livelihoods through inclusive participation and strong labour standards, and promotes climate change mitigation and adaptation, with the goal of enabling provision of affordable and accessible nutrition.
